If you've ever played Pokemon X or Y, you'll recognize this butterfly pokemon as Vivillion! A Vivillion's wings can have many different variations, depending on where they live. In this tutorial, I used circles, rectangles, squares, and triangles to make a Savanna Vivillion. Also, this design uses half circles and an irregular shape for the butterfly abdomen, so keep reading to learn something new!
What you will need:
-Toothpick
-Scissors
-Glue
-Scrap white paper (to make the shiny square spots on the eyes)
-Fifteen to twenty 22" black strips of paper
-Nine 11" black strips
-Four 22" dark blue strips
-Ten 11" dark blue strips
-Twenty five to thirty 22" aqua strips
-Two 44" light grey strips
-Four 11" light grey strips
-Fourteen 22" yellow strips
-Two 44" dark grey strips
-One 22" dark grey strip
-Background paper (I used two pieces of 8" x 11" white computer paper)
Note: 11" is 28 cm, 22" is 56 cm, and 44" is 112 cm. Most of the black paper strips should be thick, or around 1 cm. For the hands and feet, the black strips can be thinner (0.5 cm). It's also a good idea to have extra strips of paper for all colors, just in case.
To get started
This paper quilling design involves a lot of pieces, and so this tutorial is pretty long. Just saying. Make this if you are extremely bored, and/or have lots of time to kill. Follow along with this video, or keep reading the directions below:
Step 1: Use the toothpick to roll the 44" dark grey strip. Make a very loose coil, glue to secure, then press the circle into an oval. While still holding the oval, pinch the left and right ends to make a half circle. This is the top of the head.
Step 2: Roll the 44" light grey strip and make the same loose coil, or even looser coil, than Step 1. Glue to secure, pinch into a half circle, then glue this half circle to the piece from Step 1. You should now have a circle where the top is dark grey, and the bottom is light grey.
Step 3: Take a black strip of paper, measure out how long you want the antenna to be, and cut it. Then glue the antenna down above the top of the head, on the left side. Glue another antenna down of the same size on the right side.
Step 4: Roll the 11" light grey strip, and expand into a loose coil. Glue it, then pinch into a triangle. Make a second light grey triangle.
Step 5: Roll the 11" black strip into a loose coil. Glue and pinch into a triangle. Make a second black triangle. Now put the black triangle on top and glue to the light grey triangle, to form a diamond shape. Make another diamond, then place these on top of the antennae.
Step 6: Roll the 22" black strip and make a medium loose coil. Glue and pinch into a triangle. Make another black triangle. These are the eyes.
Step 7: Use the white scrap paper and cut 6 small white squares. Glue three white squares to each black triangle eye, then glue the eyes to the top dark grey part of the head.
Step 8: Take a black strip of paper, measure out how long you want the mouth to be, and cut it. Curve the mouth into a smile, and glue to the light grey part of the head.
Step 9: Roll the 22" dark grey strip, and make a loose coil. Glue and pinch into a rectangle. Now glue this rectangle under the light grey part of the head. This is the neck.
Step 10: Roll the 44" light grey strip into a loose coil. Glue to secure, then pinch into a square. Place and glue this square under the neck.
Step 11: Roll the 11" black paper strip into a tight coil. Glue to make a paper quilled circle, then glue this circle to the body, in between the dark grey rectangle neck and the light grey square. Make another small black circle and glue to the body (you have now made the hands).
Step 12: Roll the 44" dark grey strip. Make a very loose coil, same as Step 1, and glue to secure. Pinch into a half circle, then hold the circle to form the letter "D". Now to the right of the top of the D, pinch to form another corner. You should now have 2 right angles on top, and a V shape at the bottom. This is the abdomen.
Step 13: Roll the 11" light grey strip, and make a loose coil. Glue, then pinch into a triangle. Make another light grey triangle.
Step 14: Roll the 11" black strip into a very loose coil. Glue and pinch into a long thin triangle. Make another black triangle. Now put the light grey triangle on top and glue it to the black triangle, to form another diamond shape. Glue both the feet to the top of the abdomen part.
Progress check; by now you should have something that looks like this:
Now we will start on the wings.
Step 15: First roll the 22" black strip, make a loose coil, glue, and pinch into a rectangle. Place this black rectangle diagonally like this "\". Make a dark blue, loose rectangle and glue to the bottom of the black rectangle.
Step 16: Roll the 11" dark blue strip into a loose coil, glue, and pinch into a square. Glue this square to bottom right edge of the dark blue rectangle (not to the rightmost end of the blue rectangle). Now roll the black 11" strip into a loose square, and glue this between the right side of the black rectangle and the left side of the dark blue rectangle.
Step 17: Roll the 22" yellow strip into a loose rectangle. Glue the yellow rectangle to the right side of the dark blue rectangle. Roll the 22" aqua strip into a loose rectangle. Now glue to the right of the dark blue square and below the yellow rectangle.
Step 18: Roll the 22" aqua strip into a loose triangle. Glue this aqua triangle to the yellow and aqua rectangle. Take a black strip of paper and wrap it around the entire wing. Cut off any excess, then glue the black strip to the wing.
Step 19: Now start on the second wing; roll a 22" black strip into a very loose rectangle and place it vertically like "|". Try to curve this black rectangle to make the rounded part of the wing. Roll a 22" dark blue strip into a loose rectangle and glue it to the right side of the black rectangle.
Step 20: Roll 22" aqua strips into two loose rectangles and one loose triangle. Roll a 22" yellow strip into a loose rectangle. Glue an aqua rectangle to the right side of the dark blue triangle, glue the yellow rectangle below the aqua rectangle, and glue the remaining aqua rectangle below the yellow rectangle. Then glue the aqua triangle to the right of the aqua yellow aqua rectangles. Wrap a black strip of paper around the wing, cut the excess, and glue to the wing.
Step 21: Now glue this second wing piece to the bottom of the first wing piece. The wing should now look like this:
Step 22: Roll a 22" black strip into another very loose rectangle, and curve it. Roll two 11" dark blue strips into loose squares, and a 22" yellow strip into a loose rectangle. Roll two 22" aqua strips into loose rectangles. Glue the 2 dark blue squares to the right side of the black rectangle, glue the yellow rectangle between the two dark blue squares, and glue the 2 aqua rectangles to the right of the dark blue squares and above and below the yellow rectangle.
Step 23: Roll a 22" aqua strip into a loose triangle. Glue this triangle to the right side of the aqua yellow aqua rectangles. Wrap the wing with a black strip of paper and glue it. Then glue this wing piece to the bottom of the first two wing pieces. The wing should now look like this:
Step 24: Roll a 22" black strip into a loose rectangle, and curve it. Roll an 11" dark blue strip into a loose square. Roll two 22" yellow strips into loose rectangles. Roll two 22" aqua strips into one loose rectangle and one loose triangle.
Step 25: Glue the dark blue square to the top right of the black rectangle, and glue the yellow rectangle to the bottom right of the black rectangle. Now glue the remaining yellow rectangle to the top right of the blue square, and the aqua rectangle to the bottom right of the blue square. Then glue the aqua triangle to right of the yellow aqua yellow rectangles. And finally, wrap the entire wing piece with a black strip of paper.
Step 26: Repeat step 25, then flip the second piece over, so that the long yellow rectangles are next to each other. Now glue both wing pieces together. This is the lower wing. You should now have wing pieces like this:
Step 27: Place the top wing piece on the left side of the Vivillion body, starting at the neck. Place the bottom wing piece on the left side of the body. Make loose aqua triangles, squares, or rectangles to fill in any gaps between the wing and the body.
Step 28: Repeat steps to 26 to make the right wing. Flip the entire wing over, and place the wing pieces on the right side of the body.
Step 29: Glue all the pieces together, and glue all the pieces to the background paper.
Congratulations! You have now paper quilled a Vivillion!
Variations
You can also use a 22" light grey strip, and a 22" black strip, to make the legs as long as the lower torso. And if you don't like the Savanna version of Vivillion, there are about 19 other wing patterns to try. Don't forget the shiny versions either! Use different shapes and colors to customize your own Vivillion!
