Don't have enough monster sacrifices to summon a Blue Eyes White Dragon? Just make one instead. |
Just like Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh is a popular anime and trading card game. Despite being used in the anime a lot, the real Blue Eyes White Dragon card is not that powerful. But hey, dragons are always cool. What's even cooler is, you can make this dragon using all the shapes from the previous posts.
What you will need:
-Glue
-Two to four 5.5" white paper strips (An 11" strip cut in half is 5.5", or 13.9 cm)
-One 11" dark blue paper strip
-Eighty two or more 22" multi-color paper strips (one 11" piece is white, and the other 11" piece is pale dark blue. Yeah, I know it's a lot of paper, but no pain no gain buddy)
-Toothpick
-Background paper

11" is 27.9 cm and 22" is 56 cm |
To get started
Note: This design has many pieces, many steps, and will take a long time. But it is not really that difficult. Follow along with this video tutorial, or read the steps below:
Step 1: With the toothpick, roll the 22" multi-color strip, starting with the blue side first and ending with the white side. Expand to make a loose coil, then glue to secure. Pinch the lower two ends of the circle to make a ghost shape. Place the ghost on its side to make a backwards capital D.
Step 2: Roll another 22" strip, expand into a medium sized coil, glue, and pinch into a triangle. Place this triangle to the lower left of the backwards D. This is the nose of the Blue Eyes White Dragon.
Step 3: Roll the 11" dark blue strip into a mostly tight coil, and glue it. Pinch the left and right sides of the circle to form a marquis shape (like an eye ball shape). Glue this eye on the right side of the ghost shape, in the upper middle part of the backwards D.
Step 4: Now roll the 22" strip into a medium sized rectangle, and place below the eye. This is the cheek. Roll another 22" strip into a very loose rectangle, and place above the eye. Bend the rightmost tip of the rectangle diagonally like this "/".
Step 5: Roll another 22" strip into a rectangle slightly smaller than the topmost rectangle. Put the smaller rectangle below the top rectangle. Then roll another 22" into an even smaller rectangle, and place below the second rectangle.
Step 6: Roll a 22" strip into a very loose triangle, and place under the cheek. This triangle is the lower jaw. Now roll three 22" strips into long thin triangles. Roll another 22" strip into a teardrop.
Step 6: Glue the 3 triangles to the rounded part of the teardrop. Place this resulting piece (I will just call it a dragon sideburn) in between the bottom of the cheek and the top of the jaw.
Step 7: Make a very loose rectangle with a 22" strip and curve it to the left. This will be part of the neck. Roll another 22" strip into a loose but smaller rectangle than the first, and also curve it to the left. Place the bigger rectangle on top and the smaller rectangle on the bottom. Glue the bigger rectangle under the dragon sideburn, to the smallest rectangle in the head and the rightmost side of the jaw.
Step 8: Make small to medium sized rectangles with 22" strips, and place them horizontally along the two neck pieces. Then roll a 22" strip into a medium sized rectangle and place on the lower left side of the neck, in a "\" orientation. Roll one more 22" piece into a medium rectangle and place in "/" orientation, to complete the left side of the neck.
Step 9: Roll a 22" strip into a loose square, and place below the bottom most rectangle of the left side of the neck. Make a medium sized triangle and place below the square. Then add a smaller triangle on top of the square and to the left of the neck pieces.
Step 10: Make a very loose rectangle and add to the left most/bottom of the square. Make a slightly smaller rectangle and add it to the left side/below the previous rectangle. Now make a very loose teardrop and place it round side up below the leftmost rectangle (this is the knee).
Step 11: Now make a medium sized teardrop and place it pointy side up, on the right side of the large teardrop (this is the foot). To make the foot claw, first make a ghost shape, then make a teardrop. Put glue on the inside of the ghost shape, between the two points at the bottom, and then glue the round side of the teardrop shape to the ghost shape.
Keep pressing the teardrop into the ghost shape and the teardrop will become triangle shaped. Curve the teardrop to look more like a claw. Make two more claws like this and glue them to the foot teardrop.
Step 12: Make three tight squares and glue them to the left side of the large teardrop knee. Make a tight triangle and glue below the squares (this is the left side of the tail). Then make 2 more tight squares and a tight triangle to finish the tail on the right side.
Step 13: Roll a medium teardrop. Go to the two loose rectangles (where the teardrop knee is on the left side, and the square body is on the right) and place the medium teardrop in between those two rectangles. This medium teardrop forms the shoulder.
Step 14: Just like making the foot claw, roll three ghost shapes and three teardrops (make these smaller than the foot claws). Glue the teardrops to the ghost shapes. Then glue two claws on the left and right side of the teardrop, and the final claw on top of the teardrop shoulder.
Step 15: To make the wing, start with a loose rectangle and glue it to the loose body rectangle above the teardrop shoulder. Roll a loose thin triangle and glue it to the left side of the rectangle, with the thin pointy part of the triangle facing down. Then roll a medium sized square and glue to the left of the triangle. Roll another loose, thin triangle and glue it below the square, with the pointy part facing down.
Step 16: Roll a loose rectangle and glue it to the left side of the square and triangle. Now roll a loose thin triangle and glue it below the rectangle, with the pointy part of the triangle facing down. Roll a loose thin triangle again and glue it to the top of the loose rectangle, so that the pointy part of the triangle is facing up. To finish the wing, roll a medium sized triangle and glue it to the right of the loose triangle that faces up.
Step 17: To make the wing on the right side, roll two loose triangles. Glue one to the lower right side of the topmost rectangle of the neck, making sure the triangle faces up. Then glue the remaining triangle to the right side of the topmost neck rectangle and the right side of the neck rectangle below it.
Step 18: Roll a medium square and glue it below the lowest neck rectangle piece and the lower piece of the wing you just made. The square should be on its side, sort of like a diamond. Then roll a medium rectangle, and glue to the lower right side of the square you just made. This is the forearm.
Step 19: Now roll a medium teardrop and glue to the forearm rectangle, with the round side of the teardrop facing up. This is the hand. Remember making claws (ghost + teardrop)? Well, make three small ones and glue two on top of the teardrop, and one on the right side of the teardrop.
Step 20: Roll a loose rectangle, and place it vertically like " | ". Glue this rectangle to the right of the rightmost body triangles on the dragon (the triangle that is glued to the body square that is next to the left side of the neck). Roll a loose teardrop and glue to the bottom right of the rectangle you made, with the round part of the teardrop facing right. This teardrop is the other knee.
Step 21: Roll a medium rectangle and place vertically, then glue below where the rectangle and teardrop meet. Roll up another ghost and teardrop shape into a large claw, and glue the round side of the ghost part of the claw to the left side of the medium rectangle. The outer part of the teardrop part should point to the left. This is the back foot claw.
Step 22: Roll a medium triangle and glue to the right side of the medium rectangle and below the teardrop knee. Then roll two more ghosts and two more teardrops (these should be slightly bigger than the hand claws). Glue the round part of the ghost part of one claw below the medium rectangle and medium triangle. Make sure the outer teardrop part of the claws points to the right.
Step 23: Finish the foot by gluing the remaining claw on top of the medium rectangle and the claw you just made. Roll a smaller teardrop and glue this last claw to the right side of the rightmost claw.
Step 24: With the 5.5" white paper strip, make a very tight coil and pinch into a triangle. This will be a tooth. Make as many teeth as you want and glue to the jaws of the head.
Congratulations! You have just paper quilled a Blue Eyes White Dragon from Yu-Gi-Oh!
What can I do differently?
Instead of 22" multi-color strips, you could try smaller multi-color strips. Or you could use smaller, single color strips to make different pieces of the dragon. Try matching the shading on the blue eyes white dragon; use white paper for only the light parts and pale dark blue for the shaded parts. Additionally, the teeth and background paper are purely optional.
2D paper quilling becomes more interesting as you learn more different paper quilling shapes. Simply look at a referencepicture of a blue eyes white dragon, and split up the picture into its constituent shapes. Combine the simple shapes you do know into the more irregular shapes you may see. Creating a cool paper quilling design is just like completing a puzzle with the various paper quilling shapes.
