Craft a diamond sword in real life! |
Ah yes, everyone's favorite exploration/survival/building 3D structures video game: Minecraft. Most players spend months exploring the world, trying to find the legendary diamond ore, so they can craft the legendary diamond sword. After creating the sword, the player can finally defeat the Ender Dragon and beat the game. Fortunately, this diamond sword is made out of easy to find paper, and takes only a few hours to craft.
What you will need:
Note: All paper strips are 11" long.
-Glue
-Toothpick
-Background paper (optional; I used a regular 8" x 11" sheet of white computer paper)
-One pale brown paper strip (for part of the sword handle)
-Two reddish brown paper strips (for the left part of the sword handle)
-Sixteen aqua paper strips (for the blade)
-Forty three dark blue + green paper strips (for the outline of the sword)
-Five turquoise paper strips (for the sword hilt and pommel)
-Two darkest brown paper strips (for the right side of the sword handle)
-Three dark turquoise paper strips (for the sword hilt)
-Two grey brown paper strips (for the sword handle)
-Nine grey green paper strips (for the inner blade)
11 inches is 27.9 cm |
Note: I am not an expert color theorist, so the colors I listed are just general suggestions. The actual Prismacolor Premier marker colors that I used were as follows;
Pale brown = Sand
Reddish brown = Dark brown
Aqua = Light Aqua
Dark blue + green = Navy blue + spruce green
Turquoise = Parrot green
Darkest brown = Warm black
Dark turquoise = Teal blue
Grey brown = Mocha dark
Grey green = Celadon green
To get started
Take a look at the video tutorial, or follow along with the steps below:
Step 1: First roll an 11" turquoise paper strip with a toothpick. DO NOT expand the coil; immediately glue the coil to itself to secure it. Pinch the tight coil into a square (you'll need to apply some pressure, but not too much or it will be a rectangle). This turquoise square will be the pommel of the sword.
Step 2: Next roll an 11" dark blue + green paper strip into another tight coil. Pinch into a square. Glue this square on the right side of the turquoise square you just made.
Step 3: Roll 6 more dark blue + green paper squares. Glue them together in a clockwise direction; glue one square below the dark blue + green square in Step 2, then one square to the left of that square, then another square to the left of that square, then one square above that square (and to the left of the turquoise square), then one square above that square, then one square above the turquoise square. There should be an empty spot in the upper right corner of the turquoise square.
Step 4: Now roll an 11" grey brown strip into a tight coil, and pinch into a square. Glue this square in the upper right corner of the turquoise square.
You should now have something that looks like this:
The pommel of the sword |
Step 5: Roll an 11" darkest brown strip into a tight square, and glue this to the right of the grey brown square. Then roll an 11" reddish brown square and glue this above the grey brown square. Next, roll an 11" pale brown strip into a square and glue to the right of the reddish brown square.
Step 6: After making squares with reddish brown and grey brown paper strips, glue the reddish brown square above the pale brown square made in Step 5. Then glue the grey brown square to the right of the pale brown square from Step 5. Make a darkest brown square and glue this to the right of the reddish brown square.
Step 7: Make two dark blue + green squares, and glue one to the right of the grey brown square, and one on top of the grey brown square. Roll an 11" turquoise square. Glue this turquoise square in between/in the upper right corner of the two dark blue + green squares you just made. In other words, on top of the first dark blue + green square you made and to the right of the second dark blue + green square you made.
Step 8: Now make two more dark blue + green squares, and glue both of these on top of the turquoise square in Step 7. Make 2 turquoise squares and glue them on top of the leftmost dark blue + green square that is above the grey brown square. Then add a dark blue + green square on top of these 2 turquoise squares.
Step 9: Roll an 11" dark turquoise strip into a square, and glue to the left of the last dark blue + green square you made in step 8. Add a dark blue + green square on top of the dark turquoise square.
Step 10: Make 4 more dark blue + green squares, and glue one each to the left sides of the 2 turquoise squares. Glue the remaining two dark blue + green squares to the left sides of the dark turquoise and dark blue + green square you made in step 9. You have just made the left side of the hilt.
Step 11: Make 2 dark blue + green squares. Glue one on the right side of the bottom most turquoise square. Then glue the last dark blue + green square to the right of the square you just glued.
Step 12: Make a turquoise square, a dark turquoise square, and a dark blue + green square. Glue the turquoise square below the first dark blue + green square you added in step 11. Then glue the dark turquoise square to the right of the turquoise square you just added. Finally, glue the dark blue + green square to the right of the dark turquoise square.
Step 13: Now roll three dark blue + green squares, and one dark turquoise square. Glue one dark blue + green square under the turquoise square in Step 12. Glue another dark blue + green square under the dark turquoise square from step 12. Glue the dark turquoise square under the dark blue + green square from step 12, and the last dark blue + green square to the right of that dark turquoise square you just glued.
Step 14: To finish the right side of the hilt, make 2 more dark blue + green squares. Glue one below the dark turquoise square you made in step 13, and one below the rightmost dark blue + green square you made in step 13.
You should now have something that looks like this:
The hilt of the sword |
Step 15: Roll an 11" grey green strip and make a square. Glue this square in the upper right corner of the two dark blue + green squares that are above the center most turquoise square. In other words, glue the grey green square in the center of the sword.
Step 16: Next roll an 11" aqua strip into a square, and glue this above the grey green square you just made. Then add a dark blue + green square on top of the aqua square.
Step 17: Make an 2 aqua, 1 grey green, and 1 dark blue + green squares. Glue one aqua square to the right of the grey green square from Step 15. Then glue a grey green square on top of that aqua square, and put the last aqua square on top. Put the dark blue + green square on top of that aqua square.
Step 18: First make 2 dark blue + green squares, 2 aqua squares, and 1 grey green square. Glue one dark blue + green square to the right of the bottom most aqua square from Step 17, and put an aqua square on top. Glue the grey green square on top of the aqua square, and put another aqua square on top. Put the remaining dark blue + green square on top of the topmost aqua square.
Step 19: Basically, continue making a columns that is in the same order as step 18; dark blue + green > aqua > grey green > aqua > dark blue + green. Glue the entire column so that the bottom most dark blue + green square is to the right of the bottom most aqua square from Step 18.
Step 20: Add five more columns (dark blue + green > aqua > grey green > aqua > dark blue + green), making sure that the bottom most dark blue + green square of the column is to the right of the bottom most aqua square of the previous step.
Step 21: Now make 2 dark blue + green squares, 1 aqua square, and 1 grey green square. Glue the dark blue + green square to the right of the bottom most aqua square. Glue the aqua square on top of the square you just glued, then add the grey green square on top of the aqua square. Put the last dark blue + green square on top of the grey green square.
Step 22: Make 3 dark blue + green squares. Glue one to the right side of the bottom most aqua square, one to the right side of the grey green square, and one to the right side of the dark blue + green square from Step 21.
Congratulations! You have now paper quilled a diamond sword from Minecraft!
What can I do differently?
If you don't want holes inside the squares, you can actually roll the paper strip tightly with just your hands. For maximum stability, make sure all the paper strips are the same thickness, so that they glue together as one even layer. Use strong glue, or reinforce the sword handle with extra paper on the back, in case you plan on swinging this sword around. And if you want to make the sword bigger, simply use longer paper strips to make tight coil squares.
