In the Blue Exorcist anime, Mephisto Pheles is a powerful demon and the principal of the True Cross Academy. Mephisto is a master manipulator that enjoys meddling in the human world. Whether you trust him or not, Mephisto is most definitely a bad ass. Hope you enjoy this cool paper quilling design of one of my favorite anime characters!
What you will need:
-Glue
-Scissors
-Toothpick
-Four 22" pink strips (this is for the scarf)
-Twenty two 22" purple strips (this is for the hair and eyebrows)
-Two 11" black strips (this is for the eyes and mouth)
-Eighteen 22" dark red strips (this is for the inside part of the hat and collar)
-Four 11" white strips (this is for the white spot decorations on the scarf, and the hat brim)
-Two 22" white strips (this is for the eyes)
-Twelve 44" white strips (this is for the hat and clothes)
-Two 66" white strips (this is for the shoulders)
-Twenty three 22" peach strips (this for the face, neck, and ears)
-One 11" green strip (this is for the eyes. Or you could just use black paper)
-Scrap pink and light purple paper (this is for the decorations on the hat)
-Background paper (I used two pieces of blue 8" x 11" computer paper)
Note: 11" is 28 cm, 22" is 56 cm, 44" is 112 cm, and 66" is 168 cm. It's also a good idea to have extra paper strips just in case.
To get started
As you can probably tell, this design takes some time to complete. (Not like Mephisto *cough* has anything to do with *cough* time or anything like that). Follow along with the video tutorial above, or read the instructions.
Step 1: First roll the 44" white strip into a loose coil, and glue to secure. Pinch into a rectangle and place it vertically like this " | ". Make 3 more of these rectangles and glue them all together.
Step 2: Roll a 44" white strip into a very loose coil, and glue it. Pinch into a half circle, then glue on top of the four rectangles, so that the round part is face up. Now roll two 44" white strips into loose triangles, and glue one triangle on each side of the half circle.
Step 3: With the 22" dark red strip, roll a medium sized coil and glue it. Pinch into a half circle and place the round part face down. Glue the flat side of the half circle to the bottom of the inner two white rectangles. Then glue the pink and light purple scrap paper decorations on top of the dark red half circle, to complete the top hat.
Step 4: Take an 11" white paper strip and curve it along the bottom of the dark red half circle. Essentially make a curved W shape, cut off any excess paper, and glue to the bottom of the hat. Now roll a 22" dark red strip into a medium sized triangle, and place the triangle below the dark red half circle.
Step 5: Roll a 22" dark red strip into a medium sized square, and another dark red strip into a long thin triangle. Glue the square to the left of the center triangle you made in step 4, and then glue the long thin triangle to the left of the square. Make sure to glue all the dark red shapes to the white hat brim strip as well.
Step 6: Repeat Step 5 and glue the shapes on the right side. Now roll a 22" dark red strip into a large square. Glue this square to the left of the long thin triangle. Roll two large, dark red triangles and glue them below the square you just made.
Step 7: Repeat the latter half of Step 6 on the right side; glue a large dark red square to the right of the long thin triangle, and two dark red triangles below that square. The hat should now look like this:
Step 8: Roll a 22" purple strip into a large square. Glue the square below the center dark red triangle. Now roll a 22" purple strip into a long thin triangle, and bend the triangle tip to the right. Glue this triangle below the purple square.
Step 9: First roll a 22" purple strip into a triangle, then roll another 22" purple strip into a long thin triangle. Glue the first purple triangle to the dark red square and long thin triangle on the left side of the center dark red triangle. Then glue the long thin purple triangle below that purple triangle, on the leftmost side.
Step 10: Make two large purple triangles and glue them to the dark red square and long thin triangle on the right side. Going back to the left side, roll a 22" purple strip into a rectangle, and glue this to the left of the purple triangles already there. Now add a long thin purple triangle below the purple triangle you just made.
Step 11: Roll a 22" purple strip into a curved teardrop, and glue the round part of the teardrop to the leftmost bottom side of the last purple triangle made in the previous step. Going back to the right side, roll a large purple rectangle and place it horizontally like this " _ ". Glue the rectangle below the rightmost purple triangle. Now roll a long thin purple triangle and glue it below the rectangle.
Step 12: Just like the left side, make a long thin triangle and glue it below the last purple triangle made in the previous step. Then glue a purple curved teardrop below the triangle you just made. Now roll a 22" peach strip into a triangle, and glue this triangle on the right side of the purple hair spike in the center.
Step 13: Roll peach strips into three large triangles, and glue them in between the center purple hair spike and the purple hair spike on the left. Going to the right side, roll a peach rectangle and glue below the first peach triangle you made. Going back to the left, roll two large peach triangles and glue them to the right side of the leftmost purple hair spike.
Step 14: Make a large peach square, place it like a diamond, and glue below the peach triangle you just made. Roll a medium sized peach triangle and glue to the bottom right of the square. Then make a large peach triangle and glue to the right of the peach square and triangle you made. Add one more large peach triangle to the right of what you just made, so that the flat side of the triangle is vertical like this " | ".
Step 15: Remember the peach rectangle you made on the right side of the face? Glue a large peach triangle below that. Then add a large peach square to the right of your large peach triangle. And add another peach rectangle below that square.
Step 16: Make a peach triangle and glue to the bottom of the two triangles below the first peach rectangle on the right side of the face. Roll a long thin peach triangle and glue below the rightmost peach rectangle. Now add two large, peach, right triangles and glue them to the bottom of the face, so that the right angles are in the center facing each other. The face should now look like this:
Step 17: Roll two dark red strips into a medium sized triangle and half circle. Glue the triangle first below the leftmost dark red triangle, and add the half circle below the triangle you just glued. Now roll a 22" peach strip into a large curved teardrop, and glue on top of the dark red shapes you just made. This curved peach teardrop is the ear.
Step 18: For the right side, add a small dark red triangle and half circle, then add a large, peach, curved teardrop for the ear. To make the goatee, roll two 22" purple strips into medium coils. Then pinch the left and right sides of the coils to form a marquis shape. Place the marquis vertically like " | " and glue to the chin, or the two large peach right triangles at the bottom of the face.
Step 19: Make a smaller purple marquis and glue that in between the two purple marquis that you just made. Going back to the left side, add a large, purple, long thin triangle to the bottom right of the leftmost purple curved teardrop. Also add a purple triangle to the bottom left of that teardrop. To extend the hair on the right side, add a large, purple, long thin triangle to the left side of the rightmost purple teardrop and a small triangle to the bottom right of that purple teardrop.
Step 20: For the neck, roll two large, peach, right triangles. Position these triangles so the right angle is on the outside, or the pointy part of the triangle is on the inside, and glue these peach triangles below the peach chin triangles. Now roll the four 22" pink strips into large, thick rectangles by lightly pressing the coil into an oval and then pinching the corners.
Step 21: Place the four pink rectangles vertically like " | ". Glue them to each other, and under the peach neck triangles. With two dark red strips, make large right triangles. Place one dark red, right triangle so the right angle is at the top right, and glue this triangle to the leftmost peach neck triangle. Slide the dark red triangle under the purple hair.
Step 22: For the right side, place the dark red, right triangle so the right angle is at the top left, and glue the triangle to the rightmost peach neck triangle. Slide the dark red triangle under the purple hair. Now roll a 44" white strip into a large right triangle, and place the right angle of the white triangle at the bottom left. Then glue the white triangle below the dark red triangle on the leftmost side.
Step 23: Roll a 44" white strip into a medium right triangle, and place the right angle of the triangle in the upper right. Glue this triangle to the left of the white right triangle in the last step. Now roll a 44" white strip into a large triangle and glue this on top of the medium, white, right triangle you just made.
Step 24: For the right side, make a large, white triangle. Place the triangle with the tip facing up, and glue to the rightmost side of the dark red right triangle. Then make a large, white, right triangle and glue it to the white triangle, so that the right angle is facing to the upper right.
Step 25: Roll the two 66" white strips into very loose coils. Glue to secure, then pinch lightly into a half circle. Glue one half circle on the left side of the leftmost pink rectangle, and one half circle on the right side of the rightmost pink rectangle.
Step 26: Roll two of the 11" white strips into small coils. Glue one coil on the top right of the third pink rectangle. Glue the large small coil to the center left of the leftmost pink rectangle. Roll the remaining 11" white strip into a medium sized half circle and glue at the bottom in between the second and third pink rectangle.
Step 27: With two 22" white strips, make loose rectangles for the eyes. Take an 11" black strip and wrap it around the white rectangle at least twice. Use scissors to cut off the excess black paper, leaving at least a centimeter or two of black paper extending out from the eye. Make sure to glue the black paper to the white rectangle.
Step 28: Cut the 11" green strip in half. Roll each half into a tight coil, glue, and pinch into a marquis. Glue a green marquis onto the center of each white rectangle eye. To complete the eyes, glue them onto the face slightly above the peach, curved teardrop ears, at a downward slant like this " / " and " \ ".
Step 29. With the remaining black paper strip, bend into a U shape, and glue to the face, above the goatee. Now with a 22" purple strip, make a loose coil, pinch into a half circle, and press with a toothpick to make a crescent. Continue pressing the crescent flat to make a large eyebrow. Make one more purple crescent eyebrow and you're done!
Congratulations! You have just paper quilled Mephisto from Blue Exorcist!
How to make it better
Just like in crochet, everyone paper quills differently. Instead of using loose, large shapes like me, you can try using many smaller, tighter coil shapes. Try using a sizing board to make the shapes the same size. And you can always try paper quilling Mephisto in a different pose, such as in profile (side view) or three quarters.
