  3. Change it up!
Paper quill a whole garden of happy Chao!

In the Sonic video games, Chao are pet-like creatures that you can raise to become good or evil. Raising good Chao takes a lot of time and effort. Fortunately for you, a paper quilled Chao is much easier to make. Just use some curved teardrops, and you're good to go.

What you will need:

-Glue
-Toothpick
-Two 11" white paper strips (for the eyes).
-Two 11" dark blue paper strips (or multi-color strips where 70% is dark blue, and 30% is a lighter dark blue. These are for the eyes).
-One 22" pink paper strip (for the mouth).
-Two 11" pink paper strips (for the wings).
-One 22" yellow paper strip (for the yellow circle on top).
-Five 11" yellow paper strips (for the yellow parts on the head, arms, and legs).
-One 66" light blue paper strip (I used blue computer paper. This is for the head).
-One 44" light blue paper strip (for the body).
-Four 22" light blue paper strips (for the arms and legs).
-Background paper (just plain computer paper).

11" is 27.9 cm, 22" is 56 cm, 44" is 111.7 cm, and 66" is 167.6 cm

To get started

Follow along with the video tutorial, or go through the steps below.

Step 1: With the toothpick, roll the 66" light blue strip. Expand into a very loose coil, and glue to secure. Then make a curved teardrop; first pinch into a teardrop, then bend the pointy end of the teardrop to the left. This is the Chao head.

Step 2: Roll the 22" yellow strip, make a loose coil, and glue it. Glue this coil above the top pointy part of the head.

Step 3: Make a loose coil with the 11" yellow strip, glue it, and pinch into a triangle. Glue this triangle on top of the tip of the head, below the yellow coil you just made.

Step 4: Roll the 11" dark blue strip (if you are using the multi-color strip, roll the dark blue part first and the lighter blue part last). Make a loose coil, glue, then pinch into a oval shape. This is the inside of the eye.

Step 5: Put some glue on the upper part of the 11" white paper strip. Wrap and glue the white paper strip around the oval you just made. Keep wrapping the white paper strip around the oval a few times, then rip off the excess white paper strip. Glue the remaining end of the white paper strip to itself to secure it, then glue the eyes onto the head.

Step 6: Make another eye by repeating steps 4 and 5. Then roll the 22" pink strip and make a loose coil. Glue to secure, then pinch into a ghost shape. Place this pink ghost so that both pointy ends are facing up, and glue the mouth onto the head.

Step 7: Roll the 44" light blue strip and make a loose coil. Glue, then pinch into a ghost. This is the body. Place and glue this under the head.

Step 8: Roll the 22" light blue strip. Expand into a loose coil, glue, and pinch into a curved teardrop. This is the arm. Place the arm so that the pointy part of the curved teardrop is in between the head and the body.

Step 9: Roll the 11" yellow strip and make a loose coil. Glue, then pinch into a ghost. Place and glue this ghost on top of the curved teardrop you just made. This is the yellow part of the Chao's arm.

Step 10: Make another arm by repeating steps 8 and 9.

Step 11: Now roll a 22" light blue strip into a loose coil and glue it. First press the coil into an oval, then make a ghost by pinching the bottom two corners. Place the ghost so the two pointy ends are face up, and put this under the body. This is the foot.

Step 12: Roll a 11" yellow strip into a loose coil. Glue to secure, and pinch into a ghost. Place and glue this ghost on top of the foot you just made. This is the yellow part of the Chao's foot.

Step 13: Make another foot by repeating steps 11 and 12.

Step 14: Roll the 11" pink strip into a loose coil, and glue it. First pinch the bottom two corners as if making a square. Then place the toothpick on the center of the coil, and press down. Now the shape should look like two triangles connected together with a flat bottom.

Turn the shape so that the flat side is vertical like this " | ". Glue this pink wing to the side of the body, below the arm. Make another wing and glue to the other side of the body.

Congratulations! You have now paper quilled a Chao from Sonic!

What can I do differently?

For all the light blue paper strips, experiment with the looseness of the coils to make smaller or bigger shapes. You can also adjust the anagle of the arms, which changes how the pink wings will look. Instead of a pink open mouth, you can also place a thin black strip of paper in a smile. As for the face, you can make a winking eye by combining a ghost, triangle, and ghost into an oval.
