How To Paper Quill A Shine Sprite From Mario Sunshine

  1.  Supplies
  2. Instructions
  3. Change it up!
Did you collect all 120 of these in Mario Sunshine?

Not familiar with, or don't remember much about Mario Sunshine? In this game, Mario used the F.L.U.D.D water pump-like device to clean up pollution on the Isle Delfino. (As for me, all I remember was the catchy Delfino Plaza music). Mario also has to collect the Shine sprites that Bowser Jr. stole.

So to make a Shine sprite, this tutorial combines circles, triangles, and rings. Practice making these shapes, or become inspired to make other designs!

What you will need:

-Background paper (can be any color; I used a lighter blue color)
-Twelve 22" yellow paper strips (I used marker to color in 2 pieces of 8" x 11" computer paper, then taped them, then cut strips)
-Twelve 22" light orange paper strips (these are optional and are for the outline)
-Two pieces of black paper for the eyes (I used a Sharpie to color in some eyes, then cut them out. These are not paper quilled).
-Pen
-Glue
-Toothpick

Note: 22 inches is rougly 56 centimeters

To get started:

Watch my YouTube video below, or read through the steps below:

Step 1: Use the pen to roll the light orange strip. After rolling it all the way, expand the ring as big as possible. Now glue both loose ends of the ring to secure it. (If you don't want to make an outline, skip to step 2)

Step 2: Use the toothpick to roll the yellow strip all the way. Expand the coil as big as possible, then glue to secure it. (If you made an outline, glue the yellow coil into the orange outline). You have now created the main body of the Shine sprite.

Step 3: Use the pen to roll another light orange strip all the way. Expand to make a ring that is smaller than the main body. Glue both ends of the ring. (Again, skip to step 4 if you aren't making an outline)

Step 4: Use the toothpick to roll the yellow strip fully. Expand the coil to make a circle that is smaller than the main body. Glue the coil to itself. (Optional: Make sure the yellow coil is slightly smaller than the outline, and glue it inside the ring).

Step 5: With the pen, fully roll another orange strip. Expand the ring to be slightly smaller than the circle you made before. Glue both ends, then pinch into a triangle. At the triangle top, pinch to the side to create a trapezoid shape. (Skip to step 6 if not making an outline)

Step 6: With the toothpick, fully roll another yellow paper strip. Expand the coil to be slightly smaller than the yellow circle you made before. Glue to secure, then pinch into a triangle. At the triangle top, pinch to the side to create a trapezoid shape. (Glue the yellow trapezoid into the orange trapezoid outline, if making an outline)

Step 7.Repeat steps 3 - 6 two more times, to create two more circles and trapezoids. Arrange, then glue, the 3 circles and trapezoids at the top of the main body

Step 8. Use the pen to fully roll another orange strip, and expand into a ring smaller than the circle and trapezoid. Glue both ends and pinch into a triangle outline. (Skip to step 9 if not making an outline)

Step 9. Use the toothpick to fully roll a yellow paper strip, and make a tight coil (don't expand that much). Glue to secure it and pinch into a triangle. (If you made an outline, glue the yellow triangle into the orange triangle outline)

Step 10. Repeat step 8 - 9 to create four more small triangles. Glue each triangle to the bottom of the main body.

Step 11. Glue they eyes onto the main body. Then glue the entire Shine sprite onto the background paper.

Congratulations! You have now paper quilled a Shine sprite from Mario Sunshine!

What can I do differently?

Try these variations:
-Use a different outline color (like light brown), or use gold-colored paper for all pieces
-Instead of trapezoids, use multi-color paper strips (yellow and orange) and make teardrops
-Use a different color background paper
-Make one Shine sprite with an outline, and one without

Whatever you do, let your inner artist shine! As you can see, there are infinite combinations of shapes that can be used to create paper quilling designs. I hope you try this pattern out, and create your own cool paper quilling art!
