How To Paper Quill A Fairy In A Bottle From The Legend of Zelda

Gotta prepare for the dungeon boss!

As you probably know, fairies heal all of Link's health in the Legend of Zelda games. Catch fairies in a bottle ahead of time, to use in case you're having trouble fighting a boss. Luckily, paper quilling this fairy design is much easier than catching fairies. This post will recap the basic circle and teardrop shapes, and introduce the new technique of creating a ring.

What you will need:

To make the fairy body by the normal method, all paper strips used were 22 inches long (basically, two pieces of 8" x 11" computer paper taped together the long way). To make the fairy body by the ring method, simply use one 8" light pink and magenta paper strip, one 8" white paper strip, and a pen.

-Scissors
-Toothpick
-Glue
-One to four multi-color, 22" paper strips (use one to make the fairy body, and three to make the optional fairy sparkles. Half the paper strip should be white. The remaining half should be 70% light pink, and 30% magenta.) If you want to make more fairy sparkles, use more strips, or even smaller strips with different gradients.
-Four white, 22" paper strips (these will form the fairy wings)
-Two light blue, 22" paper strips (use these to form the bottle outline)
-One dark brown, 22" paper strip (this forms the bottle's cap)
-Blue background paper

To get started

DIRECTIONS :

Step 1: To make the fairy body normally, use the toothpick to roll the 22" multi-color strip. Make a loose coil, then glue it.

To make the fairy body by making a ring, use the pen to roll the 8" multi-color strip. Then make a loose coil and glue it. Now use the pen to roll the white 8" multi-color strip, make a coil that will fit into the ring, and then glue the white circle to itself. Then place and glue the white circle into the ring.

Step 2: Use the toothpick to roll the 22" white paper strips. For the upper two wings, make a loose coil, glue it, then pinch into a teardrop shape. For the lower two wings, roll the paper into a tigher coil, glue it, and pinch into a smaller teardrop. Arrange the teardrops however you like.

Step 3: To make the fairy sparkles (optional), use the toothpick to roll the other three, 22", multi-color strips. Make loose coils to make large sparkles, or tight coils to make small sparkles. Either way, after gluing the circle to itself, pinch the circle between both index fingers and thumbs of both hands, to form an X, or shuriken shape.

Step 4: Take one light blue, 22" paper strip and fold it in half to make a "V" shape. Glue the "V" part of the paper strip down to the background paper, to form the bottle's lower right corner. You can make the bottle a rectangle sitting flat on the ground, or you can tilt the "V" so the bottle is tilted.

Step 5: Now keep gluing down the rest of the light blue paper strip to the background paper. To form the left corner of the bottle, simply fold the paper to make a right angle. Bend and fold the paper to form the bottle neck. If you run out of light blue paper, use the second light blue paper strip. Use the scissors to cut any extra light blue paper that you don't need.

Step 6: Finally, fold the dark brown, 22" paper strip into right angles, to form a rectangle that will be the bottle's cork. Glue down this rectangle to the background paper, above the light blue bottle outline. You can make an empty brown rectangle, or you can keep folding the paper to fill in the rectangle.

Step 7: Arrange the fairy body, wings, and sparkles until it looks good to you. Glue them down to the background paper.

Congratulations! You have paper quilled a fairy in a bottle, from the Legend of Zelda!

Be creative

This paper quilling design is just an idea that I had. Feel free to change up the design however you like! You can use different multi-color paper strips, smaller or larger paper sizes, or a different background setup. Instead of blue background paper, try a white background and fill in the bottle with blue marker.

Paper quilling is a versatile art form; you can combine shapes into any kind of pattern. This design used the circle, teardrop, outlines, and a ring. Stay tuned to future posts for more paper quilling tutorials. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoyed this fairy paper quilling design!
