How To Paper Quill Solrock From Pokemon

  1.  Supplies
  2. Directions
  3. Ways to change it up
Use arrowheads to make a Solrock!

Solrock is a floating, psychic rock-type Pokemon that first appeared in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire. This pokemon can spin quickly to produce a strong light, and absorbs light during the day. Supposedly Solrock came from the Sun in outer space, like a meteorite. Instead of catching this pokemon, just paper quill a Solrock instead!

What you will need:

-Glue
-Toothpick
-Background paper (I just used 8" x 11" computer paper)
-One 66" orange paper strip (for the body)
-Four 22" yellow paper strips (for the bigger spikes)
-Eleven 11" yellow paper strips (for the smaller spikes, eyes, body detail)
-One 11" red paper strip (cut it in half, then cut each half in half, to get paper strips that are 2.75". Use one 2.75" strip to make the red inner part of the eye)
-Six 11" black paper strips (for the eyes, eyelashes)

11" is 28 cm, 22" is 56 cm, and 168" is cm

To get started

Follow along with the video tutorial, or read these directions:

Step 1: Use the toothpick to roll the 66" orange paper strip. Yes, it will take a while, but keep rolling! Then expand into a loose coil, and glue to secure it. This is the body.

Step 2: Roll a 22" yellow paper strip into a loose coil. Glue it and pinch into an arrowhead shape. Glue this arrowhead shape to the top center of the body. This is the centermost top yellow spike of Solrock's body.

Step 3: With the remaining 22" yellow paper strips, create 3 more arrowheads and glue them in the remaining cardinal directions (left, right, and down). Now roll an 11" yellow strip into a loose coil, and pinch into an arrowhead. Make 3 more of these arrowheads and glue them in the diagonal directions between the bigger yellow spikes you just made.

Step 4: To start the eye, take the 11" red paper strip and fold it in half, then rip it in half. With one of those halves, fold and rip it in half. You should now have two 2.75" strips of red paper. Roll one 2.75" red strip into a tight coil, glue, and pinch into a thin rectangle.

Step 5: Add some glue along the end of an 11" black paper strip. Place the red thin rectangle you just made onto the gluey part, then wrap the black paper strip around the red rectangle. Keep wrapping until you run out of black paper. Glue the black paper to itself to secure it, then pinch the black paper into
a rectangle.

Step 6: Roll an 11" yellow paper strip into a loose coil, glue, and pinch into a half-circle. Glue this half circle on top of the black rectangle you just made. Glue another yellow half circle on the bottom as well.

Step 7: Add some glue along the end of an 11" black paper strip. Add the entire eye that you just made to the gluey part, then roll the black strip around the entire eye. Keep rolling until you run out of black paper. Glue the black paper to itself to secure.

Step 8: Take an 11" black paper strip and rip off small pieces from it. Glue 6 of these small pieces to the eye, so that the eye has 3 eyelashes on top like this " \ | / " and 3 on the bottom like this " / | \ ".

Step 9: Repeat steps 4 through 8 to make the second eye.

Step 10: Glue both eyes on top of the orange body.

Step 11: Fold an 11" yellow paper strip in half, then rip in half. Take one of those halves, then fold and rip in half again. Use one 2.75" yellow strip to make a tight coil, and pinch into a small triangle, or a half-circle. Glue this triangle in between the eyes.

Step 12: Roll two more 2.75" yellow strips into small triangles, and glue these two under the first yellow triangle you just made. Optionally, continue to roll more 2.75" yellow strips into various small triangles or other shapes, and glue on top of the orange body, near where the major yellow body spikes are.

Congratulations! You have now paper quilled a Solrock from Pokemon!

What can I do differently?

To make the orange body larger, roll a paper strip longer than 66". Use more 22" yellow paper strips, to make all the yellow body spikes the same size. If you have a paper crimper device, you can roll the yellow paper strips in the paper crimper, to make the paper look more rocky and zig zaggy. And you can add as many or as few 2.75" yellow triangles to the Solrock body as you want.
