  1. Supplies

  3. Enjoy!

Make this for you or your fellow One Piece fans!

Maybe you and your friends are big fans of One Piece. Or maybe you've never heard of this pirate-themed anime. Either way, today's post will introduce you to a basic paper quilling project and a lengthy anime series.

Need a quick refresher about the Op-Op fruit? In One Piece, there is a devil fruit called the Op-Op fruit. The character Trafalgar Law was forced to eat this fruit. Now Law has the "ROOM" ability, where he can control or operate on everything inside a specific territory. Anyway, paper quilling the op-op fruit isn't nearly as complicated as this explanation.

What you will need

For this design, all paper strips were around a quarter inch wide. (Note: The wider the strips, the taller they will be. So just keep them under a half inch in width.)

To paper quill the Op-Op fruit, you need:
-One 22" long paper strip (dark red) for the fruit/heart outline
-Five to ten 5" long paper strips (dark red) for the inner swirls
-One 7 3/4 to 8" long paper strip (dark green) for the curly stem
-One 1.8 to 2" long paper strip (dark green) for the vertical stem
-Glue
-Scissors
-Marker (I used a Prismacolor Henna marker. You just need a reddish/raspberry color)
-Toothpick
-Background paper (I just used half a sheet of computer paper)

To get started

Watch a video tutorial, or follow the steps below:

Directions:

Step 1: With the marker, draw a heart on the background paper. Color in the heart.

Step 2: Fold the 22" dark red paper strip in half, to form a "V" shape. Glue the V shape to the pointy bottom part of the heart.

Step 3: BE PATIENT. Wait for the glue to dry, then continue gluing the rest of the paper strip to the outside border of the heart. (The paper strip won't stick if you keep moving it around, and it will be messy). After you glue the entire outline, cut off any extra paper with scissors.

Step 4: Glue the 2" green paper strip to the top center of the heart. This forms the vertical stem of the fruit.

Step 5: Use the toothpick to roll the 8" green paper strip about 30% (do not roll the entire strip). Now move the toothpick in the reverse direction; unroll the coil with the toothpick. You now have a scroll. Adjust the scroll until you like the way the spiral looks (this is the spiral part of the stem).

Step 6: Now adjust the other end of the paper strip, until you like the way the curve looks. This will be the curvy part of the stem. You can partially roll this end with the toothpick, bend the paper, then cut off the extra paper to get a curve. Or you can cut off the excess paper first, then glue the paper strip in a curve shape.

Step 7: After gluing down the long green stem part, use the toothpick to roll the 5" dark red paper strips about 75%. These paper strips become the swirls on the inner part of the heart. Adjust the scrolls to your liking (you can cut off the extra paper strip, or make the scrolls looser or tighter with your hands).

Step 8: Now that you have a bunch of scrolls, simply arrange them into the heart until you like what you see. After you decide on a good design, glue down the scrolls.

And that's it! Congratulations, you have now paper quilled the Op-Op fruit from One Piece!

What can I do with this?

There are many ways to enjoy your new artwork. You can frame it (in a paper, wooden, or metal frame). Or you can put it on a birthday card, or other celebratory card. Attach a string or ribbon to the back, and hang it up as an ornament. Whether you display your art, or give it to friends and family, be proud of your paper quilling knowledge and art!
